Heart Gallery of Wisconsin to present heart-warming portraits of children hoping to be adopted

Exhibit premiere set for Betty Brinn Children's Museum

Milwaukee (09/17/05) Every child deserves a home and a loving family. Today, there are 532,000 children in the United States foster care system, and 129,000 of them are hoping for a loving adoptive family. Children's Service Society of Wisconsin, in conjunction with a volunteer committee, is working on an innovative recruitment project called The Heart Gallery of Wisconsin. The Heart Gallery of Wisconsin is dedicated to raising awareness about foster kids and adoption and is based on a simple idea that has already made a huge impact in other states across the nation.

The Gallery, which features a photo exhibit of children in need of adoptive homes, will premiere Thursday, Nov. 3 from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Betty Brinn Children's Museum, 929 E. Wisconsin Ave. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

Professional photographers have volunteered their time to take compelling pictures of children hoping to be adopted, with the portraits exhibited in a gallery format. These photographs will also be shared via a Wisconsin-based Web site with the hope that potential families will be moved to inquire about adoption. The Web site will launch in mid-October, www.heartgallerywi.org.

The concept, which began with a single exhibition in Santa Fe, N.M., has experienced great success and now includes 60 Heart Gallery organizations in 45 states. The Heart Gallery was featured on an August broadcast of ABC's 20/20.

The children featured in the Heart Gallery of Wisconsin currently are living in foster care under the supervision of the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare. The gallery premiere coincides with Children's Service Society of Wisconsin's recognition of National Adoption Awareness Month throughout November.
